Tax on Soda? Seriously?
Posted On 04/05/2010 23:05:04

I have heard that the federal government is trying to increase the tax on a bottle of soda by 27 cents.  Of course, they are disguising this tax increase as a way to slim down America's youth!  We all know its about increasing revenue, and nothing more.  People that love soda will go to cheaper brands, or better yet, use one of the thousands of fountain machines that offer soda "not in a bottle or can"!  For years, the government imposes taxes, and the private sector figures out a way around them or atleast to minimize their effects on their company.

Did increasing taxes work with alcohol, gasoline, or cigarettes?  No it didn't!  Just once, I would like the government to reduce the cost of healthy foods and services, instead of always taxing whats bad for us. But that won't make them any money, that would only help the population, and who in gov't wants to do that?

Besides, the people engaging in unhealthy habits are going to need their money later for all the health issues they might be creating!!   Oh wait, no they won't...... we'll have national healthcare by then. The rest of us will pay for it...... again.       Geez!!!!

VA shredding claims documents?
Posted On 03/17/2010 21:22:26

I was reading a story this weekend regarding a 2009 report from the Veterans Administration Office of the Inspector General, stating that the VA had been engaging in a policy of "shredding" drop mail and documents related to claims for veterans.  One employee stated that he would go home on Friday with incoming documents and drop mail stacked all over the desks, but when he would return on Monday, it'd be gone.  Another employee (involved in the shredding) was promised a bonus for "being so cooperative and handling the team shredding", according to sources.

Now, we're not talking old paperwork not needed, we're talking about incoming mail that hasn't been processed or filed yet!  Death certificates, award letters, and applications, necessary in processing VA claims.

Check out http://www.vawatchdog.org/  for those employee statements and more information on this tragic story!

I thought the Myrtle Beach Grapevine and Rome Grapevine readers would like to know about this, if you hadn't already heard.
